“Pride & Humility”

“The only greatness is the greatness of humility.”

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are doing well!  I had such a blessed Sabbath yesterday! Though it was rainy and oh sooo much colder than last Sabbath, God truly brought sunshine to my soul :).  The message the speaker shared was about pride & humility – something I had just been studying in my morning devotions this past week! It’s amazing how God works ?  In the future Sabbath Sermon Posts to come, I look forward to sharing pictures with you all from the day, including my mom and sister’s modest church outfits (and mine as well) for those of you who need ideas, our meals, and the activities we did for the day!  Now time for these sermon notes!  May you be blessed by the sweet, reviving and sanctifying Word of God ?

I will put an * by my little side notes/thoughts ?

THE SCRIPTURE READING: “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility:for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” – 1 Peter 5:5-6

+“The only greatness is the greatness of humility.” {The Desire of Ages, page 650}

+Luke 17:7-10 = Jesus is teaching the virtue of being a good servant

+Servants do their duty.

-The servant doesn’t help himself, but others first.

-So what about us? We are all servants to one of two masters. Either we are servants of God or of Satan.  Whom do we serve? Whom do you serve? Who do I serve?  As Christians, we serve God.  And to serve Him as good and faithful servants we ought to be humble and have an obedient attitude.

+Thought: Why do we get so agitated or upset when cashiers don’t greet us, or when someone on the road is going “too slow” or does something we don’t like, or when our siblings say something mean to us, or when we (speaking to the husbands mainly ;-)) come home from work and no food is prepared, etc?  OUR PRIDE.

-Pride is an attribute of Satan.

-Lucifer (now Satan) wanted to ascend (Isaiah 14:12-14)

-Jesus wanted to descend (Philippians 2:8)

* I noticed that in the next verse after each referenced verse above (Isaiah 14:15, and Philippians 2:9), God shows us what happens when we want to put ourself first above others or God, and what happens when we choose to humble ourselves to serve God and others before ourselves. Quite interesting ? Check it out! ) *

+These 2 masters are contending for our eternity!!  *Who will we let win our hearts? Will we serve Satan and choose to live in pride, or will we serve Jesus and humble ourselves?*

4 Reasons We Ought to Humble Ourselves

1. TO SIMPLY BE HAPPY!happiness

+“Happy is to be humble, to be humble is to be happy!”

+Matthew 5:5  – the meek will be rewarded

+John 13:15-17 – happy are ye if ye serve one another

+Matthew 11:28-30 – when we follow Christ in being meek and lowly in heart – in working for God’s kingdom by sharing the good news of Jesus, His love and sacrifice for us, we will find rest to our souls! Read the chapter “The Invitation” in the Desire of Ages (specifically pgs 331-332) to read more about the “Matthew 11:28 experience”!

2. TO REVEAL JESUS!revealjesus

+ …especially to the ones closest to us like our family/ those we live with. They need to see and  learn more about Jesus too!

+ What did Jesus do? Philippians 2:8 – He humbled himself to die for us!

+ Humility is Jesus’ first sermon to His disciples

+ Jesus teaches us the path to the perfect death – the death of self!

+ God takes your nothingness and ugliness and turns it into the beautiful character of Christ

+ Beware of the “pride of holiness”. *As Jesus grows you and you come up higher in your walk with God, don’t look down upon others because they aren’t where you are!  You didn’t make yourself “good” and you never can! Only God works in us to do His good will and pleasure, and He can do the same in the ones you may be looking down upon. Instead of looking down upon them, how about you reach out to them and point them to Christ who can teach and sanctify them?!*

+ Just like the recent “blood moon”  (*did you all see it?! google it! ).  Normally, the moon reflects the light of the sun, but in a lunar eclipse, the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line and the earth blocks the sunlight from getting to the moon, but since the the sun is behind the earth, it casts a shadow on the moon from shining on the earth, and this shadow covers the entire moon!

+ So now that you understand how the blood moon happened, back to statement ”just like the recent “blood mood”.  We don’t want what happened to the moon to happen to us.  We aren’t to let Satan eclipse the Sun (Son) of Righteousness (Jesus Christ) form shining on us and stop us from reflecting HIS light, and to allow him to cast his crimson red of sin upon us! *p o w e r f u l !*

+ Our testimony is to reflect the light – the character – of Jesus Christ.

+ Matthew 16:25

+ Self goes down, Christ comes up!

+ Isaiah 57:15 – God promises to revive the spirit of the humble and the heart of the contrite!

+ God will only revive our hearts when they are humble and contrite (repentant/sorrowful/sorry for sinning against our God and fellow man)

+ Psalm 34:18 – God is near the broken hearted and saves those who have a contrite spirit

+ 1 Peter 5:5-6 – one day, God will reward us; stay humble before Him and others!

+ 2 Chronicles 7:14 – humbling ourselves before God plays a big role in God hearing us, forgiving our sins and healing us!

+ When it comes down to it, the main reasons for divorce and  broken homes and relationships is PRIDE! *Mercy!*

+ Remember Jesus’ example in Philippians 2:8

+ Proverbs 22:4 – being humble and fearing our God brings riches, honor and life

+ *By experiencing the other results of being humble – happiness, revealing Jesus and experiencing personal revival, we are being used by God to be a light for Him!*

+ So How Can We Practically be Humble?

– It’s a simple 4 letter word!  LOVE!!

– LOVE as Jesus loves! (*See 1 Corinthians 13)

– Love is impossible without humility.

– Love IS humble! (1 Corinthians 13:4, 5)

– John 15:13 – the greatest love is to lay down your life for your friends!

– *This includes dying to the life of your pride – your self!*

+ Remember 1 Peter 5:5-6 – God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble!

+ *Only by receiving God’s grace and Holy Spirit to work upon our hearts, can this be accomplished in our sinful, AKA selfish, hearts!*

And we then we ended the service with the beautiful and humbling hymn, “At the Cross”! It was so beautiful :-).

I pray that this beautiful message has blessed you as much as it has blessed me! It’s hard to admit when we are being prideful, but it is oh so necessary if we are going to truly follow our Jesus. Dying is painful, and thus “dying” to self is as well – going against our natural desires and inclinations to please and lift our selves first, before and above others, is hard and it hurts, but I tell you, with the grace of God and looking unto Jesus – our perfect, loving, humble Saviour, this becomes the most beautiful death for the Christian! Praise God! It’s a long journey, but it’s a journey worth taking, for we have this promise: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”  -Philippians 1:6

Truly I left this hour of worship with this realization:

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” -Philippians 1:21
