“But the hour cometh, and NOW is, when the TRUE worshippers shall WORSHIP the Father IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH:for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23,24
The Sanhedrin (legislative religious leaders of Israel)”knew” the Scriptures formally….but they didn’t know “The Word” – The One of whom they all testified – Jesus Christ – personally. This is why Jesus later tells these leaders to “SEARCH” the Scriptures (John 5:39), for they had rejected Him, thinking they had eternal life knowing “of” the Scriptures, but those same scriptures testified of Him! Clearly they were missing something!
If we want to worship God from a true, pure, and undivided heart of worship – in Spirit and in truth, we must search the scriptures with a humble, surrendered heart and find and see JESUS our Saviour in it all. And we must hide it – hide HIM, in our hearts. We must allow nothing to separate us from Him. ! We must let God’s Word, which points us to Jesus Christ, change us and we must LIVE IT. And we can only do this by the grace of God! By looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith!
By beholding Jesus in The Word (He is the Word! ;-)) , we WILL be changed by the working of the Holy Spirit.
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18
Search for Jesus in God’s word, and let Him transform your heart and life. No more shall we worship God externally – as a show, tradition or a common learned routine, but in spirit and truth as we are wholly changed to reflect the glory of our God. And what does that mean exactly? The explanation could go on for quite some time I am sure, but these sweet lyrics come to mind:
“May my steps be worship,
May my thoughts be praise,
May my words bring honor to Your name.”
It means that our whole lives will praise and speak of the love and faithfulness of God…that we will worship Him with ALL of our being….
…in Spirit and in truth 🙂
